"Forget Credit Cards – The most important piece of plastic in your wallet is your library card. People who live well and long tend to be avid, curious readers. Brush off your card and put it to use today." Better Homes and Gardens – August 2008

ORGANIZATIONAL CHANGES: At the July 30 Quarterly Membership meeting, it was announced that our parent organization, Friends of the Library of Tampa-Hillsborough County (FOL/THC), is being reorganized. This move will provide more professional services and will include local Friends groups that are not now affiliated. Our Friends of the SouthShore Regional Library (FOSSRL) is a chapter of FOL/THC. President Frances Hereford made it clear that FOSSRL would continue to operate solely for the benefit of the SouthShore Regional Library and our activities would be confined to providing programs, services, and equipment for the SouthShore Regional Library. At this meeting, Jim Duffy was elected to be the FOSSRL representative on the FOL/THP Board.

DISPLAY CABINET PURCHASED: As part of the Friends SouthShore History Project, the Friends of the SouthShore Regional Library have purchased a special cabinet for the display of ancient artifacts collected by local Paleontologist, Frank Garcia. It is anticipated that this display will be of great interest to adults and children alike. Email Fred Jacobsen at GoThere@TampaBay.rr.com for information on how your organization or community can participate in the SouthShore History Project.

COMING EVENTS: The next Friends Membership Meeting will be on October 29th at 3 p.m. in the Community Meeting Room. The 2009 Annual Meeting is scheduled for January 28, 2009 at SSRL.

WANT TO VOLUNTEER?: Both the Friends Books Store and the Library can always use your assistance. If you love your Library and enjoy books, please consider volunteering. For the Friends Book Store, contact Mimi Rose at 633-0677. Library-Helpers should call Jo Combs at 272-3652 for information.

NEWS FLASH: It's a revolutionary breakthrough in technology: no wires, no electric circuits, no batteries, nothing to be connected or switched on. It's so easy to use, portable, even a child can operate it…….It's a book!

HONORS and MEMORIALS: The Summer 2008 newsletter announced that The Friends of the Library now accepts Memoriam donations. Such Memorials are recorded in the Charter Book, on display in the Library. Donations should list the name of the donor, as well as the person honored, exactly as they are to be recorded in the Charter Book. This program has now been extended to recognize Special Achievements. For example, someone servicing in our Armed Forces, or a special birthday or business achievement, or just a "Thank You" to someone special. If you would like to create a memorial, just document it and send your donation to "Friends of the Library" and mail to: Treasurer, Friends of the SouthShore Regional Library, 15816 Beth Shields Way, Ruskin FL 33573.

BOOK BAGS and KIDS ART CARDS FOR SALE: Support the Library by purchasing one of the attractive and very useful Book Bags on display at the Checkout Desk. We also are selling KIDS ART CARDS. Children from local schools painted the originals; which were reformatted into packets of eight note cards. The bags are $10 and the note cards are $5. They will make wonderful Holiday Gifts for your friends.
