Camp Bayou announces Night Paddle

Join the Camp Bayou volunteers on Saturday, October 25 for a Special Night Paddle. There will be just a sliver of a moon while we explore the Little Manatee River after dark- without flashlights!  The tour is $25 if you need to use one of our canoes or kayaks and $5 if you bring your own. Plan to arrive by 6pm so we can be on the river by 7pm. Registration required- call 813-641-8545, Thursday- Sunday between 9am and 2pm.

Camp Bayou Fall Fright Fest

 Camp Bayou Fall Fright Fest

The 4th annual Fall Fright Fest will be held on Saturday, October 4 starting with some spooky crafts and activity tables at 5pm. Activity tables open until sunset. Joining us is Little Manatee River SP, Honeymoon Island SP, EPC of HC, HC Conservation and Enviro Lands Management, and more! The Crepuscular Animals Hike (non scary) starts at 6:30pm; Haunted Hike will be stories about past misadventures at Camp Bayou and the spirits who can't rest, starting at 7pm. Each hike limited to 15 participants, first come, first served. Additional hikes will be added as needed on the half hour. The 17th Annual Camp Bayou Back to School- Back to Nature event will be held this year on Saturday, August 9 from 9am-noon! As always, the event is free. Stop by a table to learn something new about nature and receive a free school supply item, while supplies last. A free raffle for all children will offer larger prizes such as backpacks, lunch packs and more. Camp Bayou Welcomes Fall

There are cleanups, night hikes plus some day and night paddles coming up this Fall. Enjoy some fun activities at Camp Bayou this season.

Experience the trails at Camp Bayou while helping cleanup, fixup and monitor the environment during National Public Lands Day on Saturday, September 28 from 9am-noon. A special BioBlitz will document plants and wildlife through iNaturalist.org while we pick up trash. No registration needed, just come out, check in and enjoy the morning at Camp Bayou.

Camp Bayou October Events

Are you brave enough to venture into the woods (or waterways) after dark? 

Join Camp Bayou guides at a rare night event- Creatures of the Night/Haunted Hike on Saturday, Oct 14th 2023.

Two options are available:

The hike at 6pm is for the little ones to explore the woods while looking for signs of native nocturnal critters.

The hikes starting at 7pm will include some interesting tales of the crypto creatures and restless spirits that lurk in the woods that might be a bit too scary for the young'uns. There will be a limit of 20 participants per hike, with tours running every 30 minutes or so.

Each hike is $5 per person (cash only please) and includes s'mores around the campfire at the end of the walk.

Volunteer Workday at Camp Bayou

 Volunteers sought for fun one day event at Camp Bayou

This Fall's storms have wreaked havoc on Camp Bayou's Native Camp. There will be a Volunteer Workday, Saturday, Nov 19 starting at 9am, to fix up/clean up the area, to again make it useful for the Native People's Youth Programs we offer during the year. Depending on the number of volunteers, we hope to renew the hut, food cache, barbacoa, drying and skinning racks and more. Learn a bit about the Native lifestyle while helping to bring the exhibit back to life. Please email campbayou@gmail.com if you are planning to help. Volunteers under 16 must be accompanied by an adult. This is a great opportunity to get some community service hours for Bright Futures but everyone is welcome to join us!

Camp Bayou News to Use- Summer 2022

Camp Bayou has been busy this spring and ready for summer! Volunteers have been helping upgrade and improve various areas of the preserve.

Two Eagle Scout projects and a focused Bright Futures student have produced 3 beautiful and useful additions to Camp Bayou. There are 2 new seating areas, an irrigation upgrade to the native plant nursery and new easels for the Storybook trail- see photos. A huge thank you to all involved in the efforts!

The Annual Back to School- Back to Nature event, held this year on July 30 from 9am-noon, is now taking reservations at campbayou.org ! As always, the event is free. Other organizations that are participating this year include: Suncoast Youth Conservation Center, Florida Forest Service, Manatee Viewing Center, Gulf Coast Research and Education Center, and Raptor Center of Tampa Bay.

Camp Bayou continues to offer day paddle trips on the first and third Saturdays each month at 9am. Registration required.

October Events at Camp Bayou

 

Are you brave enough to venture into the woods after dark? Join Camp Bayou guides at a rare night event- Creatures of the Night/Haunted HIke on Saturday, Oct 9. Two options are available: The hike at 6pm is for the little ones to explore the woods while looking for signs of native noctural critters. The hike at 7pm will include some interesting tales of the crypto creatures that lurk in the woods that might be a bit too scary for the young 'uns. Each hike is $5 per person and includes s'mores around the campfire at the end of the walk. Space is limited, reservations are required by emailing campbayou@gmail.com .

Back to School- Back to Nature is Back!

It's time again for Camp Bayou's Back to School- Back to Nature event!

Plan to visit Camp Bayou on July 31, from 9am to noon, for the 14th Annual Back to School-Back to Nature event- a free summer morning activity that gets kids outdoors to learn a bit about nature, then receive a free school supply item. In addition to the free supplies at each nature station, there will be a free raffle ticket drawn every half hour for larger items such as backpacks. Register online at www.campbayou.org.

In addition to the Camp Bayou and Paleo Preserve volunteers, there will be visiting organizations to provide lots of opportunities to experience nature, including Hillsborough County Conservation & Environmental Lands Management, Raptor Center of Tampa Bay, Little Manatee River State Park, Gulf Coast Research and Education Center, Suncoast Youth Conservation Center, Florida Fish and Wildlife/Poject WILD, Manatee Viewing Center, West- Central Girl Scouts, Boy Scout Troop 610, League of Environmental Educators in Florida and more!

There will be a Teacher Exchange table where teachers can give away educational resources they don't need anymore and pick up other interesting new resources. Let us know you are a teacher and receive an educator goody bag in appreciation of all you do!

We welcome donations of school supply items or funds to purchase them for this event. Drop off items at Camp Bayou any Thursday- Sunday from 9am-2pm or email for pickup to campbayou@gmail.com.

At noon, there will be an Intro to Paddling session from noon until 1:30pm, where families can try their hand at paddling a canoe or kayak. Just $5 per person for 20 minutes on the water, children must be accompanied by an adult. Participation limited- first come, first served.

Cart tours have returned! Stop in any Saturday morning and ask for a ride along the trails.

​Camp Bayou looks toward Spring

 

Several changes have been happening over the past few months at Camp Bayou. In January, BOLD (the non-profit that partners with the County to provide programs) expanded its hours to include Sundays as well as Thursday- Saturday. All 4 days ​have operating hours of 9am-2pm. In addition, starting with a soft open at the beginning of February, employees from County Conservation and Environmental Lands Services have opened Camp Bayou on Monday- Wednesday from 8am-5pm.

​ ​The nature trails have expanded into the neighboring 39 acres. Look for ​ ​special activities during the Spring Equinox on March 20. Announcements are made on Facebook, the calendar, and the blog.

Golf cart tours of the trails are again available on Saturdays at 10am. Call to register- space is limited- 813-641-8545.

Registration is open for the Center's popular night paddles - this season on Saturday, March 13 and 27 . ​Canoes or kayaks are available for rental for just $25 each or bring your own canoe or kayak for a small donation of $5 each. Join Camp Bayou volunteers for a walk after dark. Experience another side of nature using only your night vision- no flashlights allowed! Walk will end with a socially distanced campfire. More items will be added as the year progresses.
