Events coming soon at Camp Bayou

The 18th Annual Camp Bayou Back to School- Back to Nature event will be held this year on Saturday, August 1 from 9am-noon! As always, the event is free. Stop by a table to learn something new about nature and receive a free school supply item, while supplies last. A free raffle for all children will offer larger prizes such as backpacks, lunch packs and more. Other organizations that are participating this year include: Paleo Preserve Fossil Museum, Hillsborough County Conservation & Environmental Lands, South Shore Regional Library, Little Manatee River State Park, Environmental Protection Commission of  Hillsborough County, Manatee Viewing Center, and Florida Aquarium.

Camp Bayou continues to offer day paddle trips on the first and third Saturdays each month at 9am.  The tour is $25 if you need to use one of our canoes or kayaks and $5 if you bring your own. A special Observe the Moon Night Paddle will be offered on Saturday, September 19 starting 7:30pm. Registration required for all- call 813-641-8545 or email campbayou@gmail.com.

Join the Camp Bayou volunteers on Saturday, October 25 for a Special Night Paddle. There will be just a sliver of a moon while we explore the Little Manatee River after dark- without flashlights!  The tour is $25 if you need to use one of our canoes or kayaks and $5 if you bring your own. Camp Bayou Fall Fright Fest

 Camp Bayou Fall Fright Fest

The 4th annual Fall Fright Fest will be held on Saturday, October 4 starting with some spooky crafts and activity tables at 5pm. Activity tables open until sunset. Joining us is Little Manatee River SP, Honeymoon Island SP, EPC of HC, HC Conservation and Enviro Lands Management, and more! The Crepuscular Animals Hike (non scary) starts at 6:30pm; Haunted Hike will be stories about past misadventures at Camp Bayou and the spirits who can't rest, starting at 7pm. Each hike limited to 15 participants, first come, first served. Additional hikes will be added as needed on the half hour. Camp Bayou Spring Fest 2025

Join Camp Bayou as it welcomes Spring with some fun activities on Saturday, March 22 from 9am-noon. Some of the activities you can expect include nature activity tables, trail walks, tomato seedling giveaway, and cart tours.

Camp Bayou Welcomes Fall

There are cleanups, night hikes plus some day and night paddles coming up this Fall. Enjoy some fun activities at Camp Bayou this season.

Experience the trails at Camp Bayou while helping cleanup, fixup and monitor the environment during National Public Lands Day on Saturday, September 28 from 9am-noon. A special BioBlitz will document plants and wildlife through iNaturalist.org while we pick up trash. No registration needed, just come out, check in and enjoy the morning at Camp Bayou.

Camp Bayou October Events

Are you brave enough to venture into the woods (or waterways) after dark? 

Join Camp Bayou guides at a rare night event- Creatures of the Night/Haunted Hike on Saturday, Oct 14th 2023.

Two options are available:

The hike at 6pm is for the little ones to explore the woods while looking for signs of native nocturnal critters.

The hikes starting at 7pm will include some interesting tales of the crypto creatures and restless spirits that lurk in the woods that might be a bit too scary for the young'uns. There will be a limit of 20 participants per hike, with tours running every 30 minutes or so.

Each hike is $5 per person (cash only please) and includes s'mores around the campfire at the end of the walk.

Spring is a great time to see gopher tortoise babies!

Join Camp Bayou as it welcomes Spring with some fun activities on March 25 from 9am-noon

- unveiling of refurbished Storybook Trail

- visit restored Giant's Fishing Cabins with commemorative signage

- nature crafts for everyone- vine wreaths, pine bird feeders, and more

- Special Camp Commemoration Craft- stencil a t-shirt or bandana (while supplies last) for just $5 or bring your own cotton material

- Butterfly habitat, bee research and prescribed fire exhibits

- Paleo Preserve Fossil Museum is open

- Tree-planting in memory of Sandy Council

Joining us for morning shenanigans are Hillsborough County EPC, Manatee Viewing Center, Florida Forestry Service and more!

No registration required and it’s free! Come out and experience all that Camp Bayou has to offer.

Later that same day, explore the Little Manatee River after dark- without flashlights! Canoes and kayaks are available for $25 per boat; $5 if you have your own vessel. Plan to arrive by 7pm to be out on the water by 7:30pm. Registration required, email campbayou@gmail.com or call the office 813-641-8545. Camp Bayou continues to offer day paddle trips on the first and third Saturdays each month at 9am, reservations required.

Volunteer Workday at Camp Bayou

 Volunteers sought for fun one day event at Camp Bayou

This Fall's storms have wreaked havoc on Camp Bayou's Native Camp. There will be a Volunteer Workday, Saturday, Nov 19 starting at 9am, to fix up/clean up the area, to again make it useful for the Native People's Youth Programs we offer during the year. Depending on the number of volunteers, we hope to renew the hut, food cache, barbacoa, drying and skinning racks and more. Learn a bit about the Native lifestyle while helping to bring the exhibit back to life. Please email campbayou@gmail.com if you are planning to help. Volunteers under 16 must be accompanied by an adult. This is a great opportunity to get some community service hours for Bright Futures but everyone is welcome to join us!

Fall at Camp Bayou!

 Get into the Fall spirit with a few fun events at Camp Bayou!

Saturday, October 1 is the Annual International Observe the Moon night paddle. Explore the Little Manatee River after dark- without flashlights! Canoes and kayaks are available for $25 per boat; $5 if you have your own vessel. Plan to arrive by 6:30pm to be out on the water by 7pm. On Friday and Saturday evenings, Oct 14 and 15, Camp Bayou will offer our popular themed night hikes. Two options are available, both without using flashlights.. At 6pm, the hike focuses on the native creatures of the night, without a scary element for the younger ones. At 7pm, the hike reflects the season with Camp Bayou's own tales of ghosts and cryptids. Both hikes end with s'mores around the campfire. Cost is $5 per person. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Space limited- register online here.

Camp Bayou News to Use- Summer 2022

Camp Bayou has been busy this spring and ready for summer! Volunteers have been helping upgrade and improve various areas of the preserve.

Two Eagle Scout projects and a focused Bright Futures student have produced 3 beautiful and useful additions to Camp Bayou. There are 2 new seating areas, an irrigation upgrade to the native plant nursery and new easels for the Storybook trail- see photos. A huge thank you to all involved in the efforts!

The Annual Back to School- Back to Nature event, held this year on July 30 from 9am-noon, is now taking reservations at campbayou.org ! As always, the event is free. Other organizations that are participating this year include: Suncoast Youth Conservation Center, Florida Forest Service, Manatee Viewing Center, Gulf Coast Research and Education Center, and Raptor Center of Tampa Bay.

October Events at Camp Bayou

 

Are you brave enough to venture into the woods after dark? Join Camp Bayou guides at a rare night event- Creatures of the Night/Haunted HIke on Saturday, Oct 9. Two options are available: The hike at 6pm is for the little ones to explore the woods while looking for signs of native noctural critters. The hike at 7pm will include some interesting tales of the crypto creatures that lurk in the woods that might be a bit too scary for the young 'uns. Each hike is $5 per person and includes s'mores around the campfire at the end of the walk. Space is limited, reservations are required by emailing campbayou@gmail.com .
