On the Trail...

My New Year's resolution this year is to try to get back on a more regular schedule for my blog posts. Even if it's just a photo and caption, expect to see a weekly post here at Nature Notes.

This week's post is inspired by the foggy mornings and the beautifully delicate spider webs that seem to appear from nowhere when they are kissed by the morning dew. The spider that weaves these intricate masterpieces is the Bowl and Doily spider, named for the bowl shaped web above a flat web. The spider waits between these layers and there is some controversy about why it would have evolved such an elaborate web for such a tiny spider.

The next time you see these sparkling gems among the grasses and shrubs, know that a very talented spider has created it!
